FUND RAISER RIDE FOR DAVE

Dave Galvin is 45 years old, married and has 2 children aged 15 and 13. The Galvin family live in the Samford area.

Dave has been a professional firefighter with the Queensland fire and Rescue Service for the last 22 years. He is based in Brisbane, however due to his specialist training he has been deployed to other parts of the state, such as Innisfail in March 2006, after the devastation of cyclone Larry. During his 22 years, Dave has devoted countless hours helping others and serving the Queensland community that he loves.

On the 24th September 2009 whilst holidaying with his family on the Gold Coast, Dave suffered a spinal injury in the C3 area rendering his a quadriplegic. His stay in hospital will be for a considerable time. Although he has suffered this terrible injury he remains remarkably upbeat and positive, which I believe is a true testament of his character.

During November 2009 Arnie Ehlers and Mark Vaughan are both work mates of Dave’s and raised $20,000 to assist the family by cycling from Adelaide to Perth across the Nullabor Plain, a total of 2,716km unassisted and completed in 18 days.

LATEST BIRDSVILLE RIDE

Arnie's latest trek to Birdsville is underway. You can track his updates below. This time SOLO and on a mountain-bike his destination is timed with the Birdsville races and his boxing tent. This time around 2,000km in prevailing headwinds (again), poor roads and predicted wet and muddy conditions.

Jindalee School support the Ride for Dave

Today, Arnie Ehlers dropped into the local Jindalee State School to chat to the kids about the ride. We are very thankful for the generous donation they made.

Love of bike riding start age 15 yrs riding 28.4 km for the first five years of his working life from Acacia Ridge to Government Printing office then in Brisbane City in George Street.

His first Triathlon was the Gold Coast Triathlon (which he was out the night before drinking with the boy’s from Tugan Surf club where he was a life saver and had to stop a every house to use their tap but he did finish with the encouragement of family).

Then would be better prepared for the first triathlon at Noosa.

From there would do the Foster Iron Man which lead him to which he thought had been the hardest was the Flight Epic Centre Mountain Bike Race which is 105km through the Toowoomba’s mountain country. He followed the Tour De France through Salon de provence in Europe “where he had lived and played Rugby League” previously.

Last year rode from Sydney to Brisbane in six days ( not realising that it was better to ride to Sydney due to the wind) better luck next time.

Rode the bike length in the Noosa Triatlon two days before leaving for Adelaide.

All rounder in what he wishes to achieve Lifesaver, boxer in Brophy’s Tent, Traialthons, Mountain Bike rider and training others to be fit. Now not only doing what he has always wanted to accomplish but doing it for a friend and fellow Firefighter.

Mark has always been keen on fitness, yet cycling did not come into his life until his late twenties. In his early cycling years, he often rode his bike to Kemp Place from his first home in Bundamba. To start with, this bike riding to and from work, probably was to save money as well as for general fitness because he had a young family.

However, it soon turned into an obsession joining Ipswich cycling club and more adventourous rides to the Gold Coast. Mark is now a member of Logan cycling club having moved to that side of town and has since won many racing events at this club. He has also competed in the Port Philip Bay race – Around the Bay in a day, as well as many other big racing events around Australia. He is a member of the Bike for Burns Committee and has raised many dollars riding from Townsville to Brisbance for this worthy cause.

Little did he know that he would be soon be riding across a desert in the blistering heat on his November holidays to raise awareness and money for a fellow fire man after a tragic accident.
